Getting and Keeping your Position on the Waitlist

Many more people apply for subsidized housing than the number of houses or apartments available. The government has made a lot of rules to make the process of applying for subsidized housing as fair as possible. The rules tell you how to ensure your application is completed properly, and provide information on how to remain active on the Waiting List. Be sure you know about these rules. Ask questions if you are unsure about anything on the application or have any questions about the waiting list process.

Rules About Getting on the Central Housing Registry Waiting List

Obtain and fill out a CHR Application for Subsidized Housing form. Provide proof of information, where requested. For example, proof of status in Canada for all individuals listed on the application.

You can apply ONLINE, BY MAIL or IN PERSON

Submit your application and documents (proof) to the CHR office either in person, or by mail, fax, or email. You can also complete and submit an online application by following the link at www.chrwec.com. You will be required to upload your documents (proof) as part of your online application.

1. The application you fill out for subsidized housing includes a list of eligibility requirements that are reviewed and considered when processing applications. You and all members of your household must meet these eligibility requirements in order for your application to be deemed eligible. For example, if anyone who will be living with you owes money to another social housing provider, he or she must have an agreement in place to pay it back, and must submit proof of the payment plan, before your household will be deemed eligible for subsidized housing.

2. You will receive a response in writing to advise of the status of your application.

3. If your application was complete, all documents were received, and all members of the household meet the eligibility requirements, your application will be deemed eligible and you will be added to the subsidized housing waiting list. If your application was incomplete, you will be advised of the information that is incomplete or the documents still required to determine eligibility.

Rules about Staying on the Central Housing Registry Waiting List

1. Once your application has been deemed eligible and you and/or your household has been added to the waiting list, you must continue to meet the list of eligibility requirements to remain on the subsidized housing waiting list.

2. If any of the information on your application changes, you must notify the Central Housing Registry (CHR), in writing, within 30 calendar days. For example, if there is a change in your income, or a change in who lives in the household, or a change in your current contact information.

3. If the Registry contacts you and asks you to respond and/or provide more information, you must do that within the time frame requested.

4. If the Registry asks you for information or a document that you are unable to provide, you can be excused from doing so as long as you prove to the Registry that you cannot obtain the requested information. Victims of abuse and survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking can be excused from providing any information or document where providing it may put them at risk.

If you Don't Want a Unit that is Offered to You

1. Applicants on the subsidized housing waiting list have only one (1) refusal of offer. If you refuse one (1) offer of a house or apartment in a location you have requested, your application will be removed from the subsidized housing waiting list.

2. A household may reapply, but will have to submit a new application and if deemed eligible, will be given a new application date.

Information about You from Someone Else

If the Registry gets information about you from someone else and is going to use that information to make a decision about your application, you have the right to know and have an opportunity to comment. For example, if someone calls and tells the Registry that you have income you did not tell the Registry about, that information might make you ineligible for subsidized housing. Before the Registry can use the information to remove your application, they must first notify you and give you an opportunity to explain or deny the information.

Reviews or Appeals

You have the right to appeal some of the decisions the Registry makes about your application. See more information about this.
